Preventing trunk fiber optic cable strikes: acoustic protection for telecom networks

Kazakhstan recently updated its compliance oversight for the Rules for the Protection of Telecommunication Networks. The regulation mandates a two-meter protection zone on both sides of any buried cable. Unauthorized digging, drilling, or heavy machinery operations inside this corridor are strictly prohibited. Cutting a fiber line leads to fines and liability for network downtime.

At Ksense, our engineers often see that physical route markers are not enough. Unplanned municipal or road construction digging is still the primary cause of sudden trunk telecom outages.

We address this directly at the physical layer. The K-DAS system uses spare dark fiber inside the operational cable to monitor ground vibrations. The system picks up the mechanical signature of an approaching excavator or directional drill 50 to 300 meters away from the cable centerline.

Operators receive an alert with precise coordinates minutes before the machinery strikes the conduit. This early warning leaves enough time to halt operations and keep the network online.
